Secretin systems in Bacillus subtilis
Abstract: B. subtilis is a Gram-positive bacterium which has an enormous ability to effectively secrete extracellular proteins directly to the culture medium. Given its physiological and genetic characteristics, it has been used as a model organism to study secretion pathways. Most of the proteins targeted outside the bacterial cell are exported via Sec pathway. Consequently, Tat, Com and ABC systems play a minor role in the protein export. In most cases the presence of a signal peptide in the target protein is obligatory to allow transport and its structure influences protein sorting in a cell. Numerous approaches were taken to eliminate limiting factors such as control proteases or instability of some regions of the genome, resulting in the construction of strains heterologously producing industrial enzymes or acting as a delivery tool for many antigens.
