Betaherpesviral infections in patients with immunological disorders
Abstract: Human herpesviruses: type 5 (HHV-5, formerly known as CMV), type 6 (HHV-6) and type 7 (HHV-7) are common DNA-viruses and have been classified as members of the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily. Primary infections with these viruses generally cause benign illnesses in infancy. The viruses remain latent in the body after primary infection and reactivate in immunocompromised individuals, such as recipients of a solid organ, bone marrow or patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The risk of herpesvirus reactivation is potentially high among these groups of people. Betaherpesviruses are associated with graft malfunction or rejection, pneumonitis in transplant recipients and retinitis with AIDS patients. After transplantation it is important to take proper antiviral therapy, which reduces virus reactivation.
