Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori primary resistance to antimicrobial agents in Poland and around the world
Abstract: Since the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and inflammation or ulceration of the stomach and duodenum has been proved, antimicrobial agents have become indispensable in the treatment of most gastroduodenal diseases. However, the widespread use of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics contributed to the development of resistance among clinical H. pylori strains which is the main factor compromising the efficacy of eradication therapy. This review summerizes recent data concerning the resistance mechanisms of H. pylori, prevalence of primary resistance to antimicrobial agents (metronidazole, clarithromycin, tetracycline and amoxicillin) in adult population in Poland and in different parts of the world as well as the application of alternative treatment for H. pylori infections, showing at the same time the scale of the problem connected with their eradication.
