Staphylococcus aureus versus the immune system
Abstract: Staphyloccocus aureus can cause various forms of subclinical and clinical infections in people and animals. These bacteria are able to produce a large array of virulence factors. Staphylococcal virulence factors are enzymes, cell-wall compounds and toxins. S. aureus uses many mechanisms which allow the bacteria to 'deceive' the host immune system. Staphylococcus aureus produces proteins which inhibit complement activation and can express substances inhibiting neutrophil chemotaxis and opsonisation by antibodies and complement proteins. Furthermore, the cell-wall structure and the ability to express polysaccharide capsule and mucus capsule helps the bacteria defeat or survive phagocytosis. S. aureus also secretes several superantigen-like toxins, which cause anergy of lymphocytes and immunosuppression.
