The effect of subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antibiotics on the external surface of Gram-negative bacteria
Abstract: The subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of various antibiotics are able to modify the molecular architecture of the external surface of bacteria and some bacterial functions, such as the ability to adhere to the host cell, the production of toxins, the susceptibility to host defense mechanisms and motility. It has been reported in literature that treatment of different bacteria with various antimicrobial agents at low doses results in cell wall, cytoplasmic and outer membrane as well as capsule changes. This review focuses on studies describing the effects of sub-MICs of antibiotics on the surface architecture of Gram-negative bacteria.
