Pathogenic features of bacteria from the Bacillus cereus group
Abstract: Increasing interest in Bacillus cereus group is connected with the growing number of confirmed foodborne disease cases noted worldwide caused by the group representatives. Sporeforming and ubiquitous in nature, they can easily contaminate food environment and food as such.
The Bacillus cereus group comprises 6 species, namely B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, B. mycoides, B. anthracis, B. weihenstephanensis and B. pseudomycoides. However, high phenotypic and genetic resemblance makes differentiation between the species difficult.
Toxin production ability coded on plasmids makes it possible for the toxin genes to be lost within few generations. Still, close affinity between the species within the group makes gene transfer from one species to another possible.
