Bacterial antiapoptotic properties

Abstract: Apoptosis or programmed cell death is an active, genetically controlled process. It is an integral part of life that maintains homeostasis in multicellular organisms. In contrast to necrosis, apoptosis allows the organism to eliminate unnecessary or damaged cells without an inflammatory reaction.
Programmed cell death also plays an important role in the pathogenesis of various infectious diseases. There is much evidence, that bacteria have the ability to induce and/or block apoptosis. Bacteria can inhibit programmed cell death in a direct or indirect way. In the first case, bacteria directly interact with the apoptotic pathway. Indirect effect on apoptosis is mediated through signal transduction pathways inside the host cell such as the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) pathways.
Many mechanisms by which bacterial pathogens inhibit the host cell apoptotic pathways are not fully understood. Further studies are necessary for a better understanding of the host-pathogen relationship.
