Role of the JC virus in the pathogenesis of cancer diseases and disorders associated with compromised immunity
Abstract: JC virus is a common human virus, found by PCR analysis in the urine of about 40% of tested individuals. In case of serious immune deficiency, like AIDS, some cancers or after organ transplantation, JCV can infect and proliferate in neural tissue. It results in a demyelinating disease of the brain, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Recent reports have also pointed to a role of JCV in cancerogenesis, in which viral proteins, particularly large antigen T, are involved. It applies to different brain tumors and cancers of gastrointestinal tract, especially esophageal carcinomas, gastric cancers and colon rectal carcinomas. The aim of this article is to describe molecular mechanisms of the JCV-mediated oncogenesis.
