The role of bacteria in biogeochemical cycle of arsenie
Abstract: Arsenie is widely distributed in the Earth's crust
and is one of the most toxic elements. It is found in soil and
natural minerals and it, therefore, may enter the atmosphere and
water. Arsenie can exist in four valence states (-3, O, +3, +5) and
in a number of organie and inorganic forms. Organie forms are less
harmful than the inorganic ones and arsenite [As(III)] is more toxic
then arsenate [As(V)]. Some prokaryotes may use arsenie compounds
for energy generation (either as electron donors or acceptors),
whereas other are only resistant to arsenie.
These microbes play an important role in speciation and mobilization
of arsenie in nature. The review of microbial arsenie metabolism and
the potential role of microbes in the biogeochemical cycle of
arsenie are presented in this paper.
