Infections with human parvovirus B19
Abstract: Human parvovirus B19 belonging to the genus
Erythrovirus is the only parvovirus known to be a human pathogen.
Parvovirus B19 has extreme tropism for human erythroid progenitor
cells and causes a variety of diseases in humans with outcomes
ranging from symptomatic to severe, such as chronic anemia in immunocompromised
patients. The virus may be transmitted to susceptible individuals
via respiratory secretions, plasma-derived products and also
transplacentally from the infected mother to the fetus during
pregnancy which may result in hydrops fetalis, abortion or
stillbirth. It is also presumable that B19-induced immune
dysfunction can predispose to infection with other pathogens,
although little is known about the effects and consequences
of mixed infections of B19 and other
infectious agents. The aim of this paper is the presentation of current
knowledge about parvovirus B19 infections and also commonly used
diagnostic procedures.
