Ebola haemorrhagic fever. Immunological and molecular mechanisms
of pathogenesis, diagnostics, experimental methods of therapy
and vaccination
Abstract: Two outbreaks of unknown haemorrhagic fever occured
in 1976 in central Africa. Mortality rate was very high, reaching
90%. Isolated virus was classified as a new member of the
Filoviridae family and called Ebola. In the following years several
new outbreaks occured. The possibility of occurrence of this disease
in developed countries and the threat of bioterrorism motivate many
scientific centers to carry on the research on the mechanisms
of pathogenesis trying to find effective treatment and vaccines.
Experimental models using Ebola virus proteins (which do not require
biosafety level (4 laboratories) have simplified investigations o f
viral protein functions. This review presents up-to-date knowledge
about mechanisms of pathogenesis, molecular structure and function
of viral proteins, rapid detection of Ebola hemorrhagic fever cases
and experimental treatment as well as vaccination against this
extremely dangerous disease.
