Role of outer membranę proteins of Gram-negative bacteria in interaction with human organism
Abstract: Gram-negative bacteria are covered by the outer membrane which contains phospholipids, outer membrane proteins (OMPs) and lipopolysaccharides. Various transport proteins: specific channels, non-specific or general porins and high-affinity energy-dependent transport systems are present in the outer membrane. The structure, location and a large number of OMPs on bacterial surface affect their multiple functions. Some OMPs are members of multifunctional OMPs that are involved in resistance to killing by human serum complement. The OMPs expression is modulated by the influence of antibiotics. The response to the presence of antibiotics and efflux pumps play a prominent role in the multidrug resistance of many Gram-negative bacteria. OMPs have been shown to act as adjuvants in the immune response as well as seem to be implicated in the adhesion of bacterial cells to animal tissues. OMPs may play a significant role as virulence factors in pathogenesis of i.e.
Neisseria meningitidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae,
Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus influenzeae and Escherichia
coli. This review focuses on OMPs because of their potential role in diagnostic assays, in antibiotic resistance, and as immunogens for prophylactic vaccination.
