Bacteria from the genus Providencia - taxonomy, epidemiology, pathogenicity

Abstract: In 1943 Stuart and co-workers described for the first time a group of paracolon bacteria which they designated "anaerogenic paracolon type 29911". Later, in 1951 Kauffman designated them as Providencia. The current classification of these pathogens is based on DNA-DNA hybridization. Until 2005 the genus Providencia consisted of 5 species: P. alcalifaciens, P. rustigianii, P. stuartii, P.rettgeri and P. heimbachae. In 2005 new species Providencia vermicola was described. P. alcalifaciens, P. rustigianii, P. stuartii, P. retgerri are recognized as facultative pathogens that under favorable conditions cause enteric disease, wound and urinary tract infections. P. alcalifaciens and P. rustigianii cause diarrhea in children, as well as diarrhea in adults who traveled abroad. P. stuartii has been recognized as a pathogen with an increasing involvement in urinary tract infections, primarily in nursing home patients with long term indwelling urinary catheters. P. rettgerii causes UTI and nosocomial infections. In this article we focus on the clinical role of Providencia sp. and on the following potential virulence factors of these bacteria: adherence, invasivenes, urease and lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin).
