Atypical Staphylococcus aureus strains defective in coagulase or dumping factor (CF)
Abstract: Production of coagulase and dumping factor is a typical feature for S. aureus species, although strains not producing these proteins have been raported. Frequency of strains showing negative reaction for coagulase or CF is accessed for 3 to 20%. CF-negative
S. aureus may lose other proteins typical for this species, as protein A or thermostabile nuclease. Lack of coagulase or CF in some
S. aureus strains has not been explained, presumably it is not result of genetic defect but rather inhibition of expression of coagulase or CF gene. Coagulase-negative or CF-negative strains of
S. aureus are in majority methicillin-resistant. This fact is probably connected with integration of methicillin-resistance region to genome of
S. aureus. This phenomenon may increase ability of the strain to recombinate and in result, causes lack of some properties typical for S. aureus.
