RNA may control expression of several genes and metabolic pathways in bacterial cells

Abstract: Since the discovery of operons it has been known that the regulation of gene expression in bacteria is mainly based on the activity of specialized regulatory proteins which modulate transcription at the early stages. Later, more evidence became available about the involvement of mRNA secodary structures as well as antisense RNA molecules in this process. Recent data suggest the role of newly described RNA molecules (sRNA, small regulatory RNA) which can regulate transcription of several genes engaged in the metabolic pathway or virulence process. These RNA molecules, using short homologous sequences can bind to different mRNAs causing their degradation, formation of mRNA alternative secondary structure or direct block of rybosome binding site. Moreover, sRNA can also interact directly with some proteins leading to the change in their activity or degradation.
