The
outer membrane compnents of Gram-negative rods and bacterial
activity of complement
Abstract
The
bactericidal process of serum caused by the complement system is an
important defence mechanism protecting the host organism against
infection caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Sensitivity of
bacteria to the bactericidal activity of complement depends
on the structure and organisation of bacterial outer membrane.
Attention has been paid to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and outer
membrane protein (OMP), which ara an outer membrane component as
one of the factors determining the resistance of bacteria to
the bactericidal action of complement. Sialic acid not a common
component in bacteria, has been found in O-specific region of LPS,
of some serotypes. In bacteria sialic acid may occur as a component
of the capsular polysaccharide of envelope and plays an
essential role in protecting Gram-negative bacteria against
bactericidal activity of serum.
