Coryneform
bacteria —
known bacteria, unknown
pathogens?
Abstract:
Coryneform bacteria
are the heterogenic group of Gram-positive rods, which comprises
fourteen genera. Many species, mostly from Corynebacterium
genus belong to the human natural skin flora and mucous
membranes. More and more often coryneform
are isolated from clinical specimens and examined as
aetiological factors of hospital infections.
During the last few years, this problem is often
undertaken in world literature, and almost not noticed in Poland. Coryneform
are opportunistic bacteria, which should not be disregarded
in the course of diagnostic procedure. From regard, that the
evaluation of its role as a pathogenic factor still makes problem,
thus cooperation of microbiologists and clinicians seems to
be vital importance.
The paper presents the history, occurrence and
virulence factors of coryneform
bacteria. Infections and resistance to antibiotics in coryneform
bacteria are also described.
